Synopsis

Mee Vasantrao: A Musical Journey of a Legend

Mee Vasantrao is a 2022 Marathi musical biopic based on the life of legendary Hindustani classical singer Pandit Vasantrao Deshpande. Directed by Nipun Dharmadhikari and co-produced by Darshan Productions and Jio Studios, the film released in theatres on 1 April 2022. It later streamed on JioCinema and became one of the most awarded Marathi films of recent years, winning two National Film Awards and several Filmfare Marathi Awards.

The story is narrated by Vasantrao himself and follows his journey from a difficult childhood in Nagpur to becoming one of India's most respected classical musicians. Rahul Deshpande, Vasantrao's real-life grandson, plays the lead role and beautifully captures his passion, struggles, friendships, failures, and dedication to music.

Mee Vasantrao took years to become the film it is, a debut director, a grandson stepping into his grandfather's shoes, a co-producer (Darshan Productions) determined to honour Vasantrao Deshpande's voice without simplifying him. A Story Inside the Family

The screenplay began with Rahul Deshpande — Vasantrao's grandson — and a long conversation about whether anyone could play his grandfather without losing him to caricature. The answer was that he would have to play him himself.

Nipun Dharmadhikari's Feature Debut

Director Nipun Avinash Dharmadhikari brought a deep musical literacy and a refusal to make a "great-man" film. He and co-writer Upendra Sidhaye structured the screenplay as a first-person account, letting Vasantrao narrate his own life.

Live-Sung Music

Almost every musical passage in the film is sung live by the cast and recorded on set, not lip-synced. This single decision shaped the entire production and is the reason Rahul Deshpande won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer.

The production travelled across Nagpur, Pune and Mumbai to recreate the 1940s–1980s Marathi musical world. Costume detail, set dressing and props were researched from family archives and period photographs.
